Job Offer : Bicycle Mechanic-Animator (5 positions available)

Position Description:
As part of the 3RVélo Verdun project, CJE Verdun is seeking five (5) dynamic and passionate individuals to join the team as bicycle mechanic-animators. Under the direction of the Project Coordinator and the Mechanic Trainer, successful candidates will have the opportunity to enhance their skills in bike mechanics, customer service, animation, and supervision, all within a learning environment.
In their role, the selected individuals will perform basic repairs, promote bike safety, and support voluntary workers recruited for the project to provide bike maintenance services from one of our three outdoor kiosks located in Verdun and Nuns’ Island.
Finally, they will act as ambassadors for sustainable mobility and promote cycling as an active transportation mode to the residents of the Verdun borough.

 

Primary Tasks and Responsibilities:

Mechanics
– Prepare and organize tools necessary for bike maintenance and repair.
– Maintain an organized and safe workspace for activities.
– Perform basic bike maintenance and repair to ensure safety and proper functioning.
– Use manual tools to make necessary adjustments and repairs.
– Assess bike components to be replaced and prepare work orders accordingly.
– Keep a record of repaired bikes and recycled materials, and assist with inventory management.

Animation
– Collaborate with team members to lead activities and community workshops on bike safety and basic bike maintenance for various audiences (children, adults, families).

Customer Service
– Provide bilingual service according to your proficiency.
– Respond to customer inquiries.
– Promote the mission and services of 3RVélo Verdun and CJE Verdun to individuals attending various activities and our kiosks.

Supervision
– Supervise and support voluntary workers in bike repair and basic maintenance tasks.
– Ensure bikes maintained by voluntary workers and self-service kiosk users are safe for road use.
– Ensure workplace health and safety procedures are applied and respected at all times.
– Participate in weekly meetings to review voluntary workers learning plans, prepare upcoming activities,
provide suggestions for project improvement, discuss volunteer challenges, and develop strategies to help them.
– Compile attendance statistics for participants in workshops and activities offered as part of the project.

Requirements:
– Eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs program:
– Aged 15 to 30 at the start of employment.
– Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee designated under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment.
– Hold a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally authorized to work in Canada in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements in effect in Quebec.
– Able to travel by bike up to 50 km and work outdoors.
– Proficiency in French or English (native or advanced level); functional bilingualism in French/English required.
– Willingness to contribute to a social and environmental mission.
– Possess the following skills and abilities: friendly and empathetic approach towards colleagues and customers, analytical skills, critical thinking, customer service, manual dexterity, attention to detail, and ability to work in a team.

– Asset: AEP in bike mechanics.
– Asset: Proficiency in an additional language (Cree, Spanish, Arabic, Italian, Mandarin, Eastern Slavic (Ukrainian or Russian), or Inuktitut).

Employment Conditions:
Type of Position: Casual
Start Date: Between May 21 and June 11, 2024, depending on availability.
Project End Date: No later than August 31, 2024, depending on availability.
Employment Duration: 9 weeks of work at 30 hours per week (or possibility to adjust the number of weeks based on availability, for a maximum of 270 hours).
Work Schedule: Shifts will be scheduled from Wednesday to Sunday, between 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM.
Salary: $17.00 to $19.00 per hour, depending on experience.
Free training provided: Advanced bike mechanics; Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS); Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification (valid for 3 years).
