Summer pedestrianization 2026
June 15 to September 14, 2026

This year, Promenade Wellington will once again be closed to car traffic from June 15 to September 14, 2026 for the summer pedestrianization, becoming the perfect place to stroll, make wonderful discoveries, and just go with the flow.

As in previous years, here’s how the pedestrianization will be implemented:

🚧 Starting June 15, the Verdun Borough will close the street between Régina and 6th Avenue.
🏄 The SDC Wellington will gradually set up the street’s summer-ready features.

The summer season will be defined by the street’s welcoming and dynamic atmosphere, comfortable, flower-filled, and shaded installations; even more greenery; and a free and diverse cultural and artistic program!

🛥️ Wellington Street will reopen to cars on September 14, 2026.

More details coming very soon!

    • One drop-off zone corner of Wellington / Willibrord

  • Access ramps: As in previous years, fifteen access ramps to the sidewalks will be added along the pedestrian street. Five ramps will be located along the longer sections of Wellington Promenade, and nine will be installed to improve access to each cooling island;

FAQ
Got questions? We answer them here!

When will Wellington Street be closed to cars, and when will traffic resume?

Promenade Wellington will be entirely pedestrian between Regina Street and 6th Avenue from June 15, 2026, through September 14, 2026.

The street will reopen to cars at the end of the day on September 14.

Am I allowed to ride my bike on Promenade Wellington during the pedestrianization?

Bicycles are permitted on Promenade Wellington during its pedestrianization. However, the street is first and foremost reserved for pedestrians, and cyclists must adapt accordingly and dismount during peak hours.

Cyclists, here are the key points for sharing the road on the Well:

  • Ride slowly and adjust your behaviour based on foot traffic. When the street is quiet, you may ride at walking speed (maximum 5 km/h). During peak times or rush hour, you must dismount and walk your bike.
  • Maintain a safe distance. A minimum of two metres must be maintained between cyclists and pedestrians. No one likes to feel like they’re being tailgated, whether on foot or on a bike.
  • Stay alert. Be especially mindful of children, who may change direction suddenly.
  • Use bike lanes for longer trips. To travel along multiple sections or cross Verdun, we recommend using the bike paths on Rue de Verdun or those along the riverfront.

This project aims to encourage active travel and accessibility to local businesses, while maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for all users.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Am I allowed to set up a booth to sell or promote my business or organization on Promenade Wellington ?

Only merchants on Promenade Wellington are permitted to set up outside their stores during the pedestrianization to sell their products. No sales booths, solicitation, advertising, or promotional activities are permitted on the street.

Failure to comply with these regulations may result in a fine issued by City inspectors.

Am I allowed to drink alcohol on the pedestrian street?

Under Section 3 of the City of Montreal’s Bylaw Concerning Peace and Order on Public Property: it is prohibited to consume alcoholic beverages on public property.

What installations are planned during this period on Promenade Wellington ?

Outdoor seating areas and relaxation spaces will be set up at several locations along the street. They will welcome visitors who want to shop, work, or relax while visiting Wellington street.

Several swings and lounge chairs will be installed along the pedestrian street for relaxation and enjoyment. The pétanque court will also be back, and to add to the fun, colorful murals will be painted on the ground.

Check out the “Outdoor installation and Programming” tab to learn all about it!

I am moving from Promenade Wellington during the pedestrianization project, or I plan to have work done that requires a truck. Can I drive onto the street with a vehicle?

In the event of a move or other exceptional circumstances (e.g., renovation work requiring the use of public space, etc.), you must apply for a temporary public space occupancy permit at least 2 days before the desired date with the borough.

For a move on a pedestrian street, you can write to the following address: verdun-ing@montreal.ca.

EVENTS
Will there be any events planned on Wellington this summer?

Absolutely! A rich lineup of free cultural events is planned throughout the pedestrianization street. Part of the program will be offered by the Verdun borough and QUAI 5160, another part by the merchants on Wellington Street, and yet another portion of events will be organized by the SDC Wellington to liven up the pedestrian street during the summer.

Stay tuned to our Events page to find out everything!

Are there any sidewalk sales planned on Wellington this summer?
